New Latin Thysanura, order name (from Greek thýsānos, usually in plural thýsānoi "tassels, fringe" —probably of pre-Greek substratal origin— + -oura, neuter plural of -ouros "having a tail of the kind specified," derivative of ourá "tail") + -an entry 1 — more at ass entry 2

Note: The taxon Thysanura was apparently introduced, in the vernacular form Thysanoures, by Georges cuvier in La règne animal, tome III (Paris, 1817), p. 158.
